COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team swept Centennial (CC) opponent Ursinus 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 27-25) on Saturday afternoon.
The win brings the Diplomats record to 12-6, 4-1 CC and the Bears dropped to 5-13, 0-5 CC.
F&M got off to a quick start, taking a 5-1 lead off a service ace from Carly Ostrowski. Starting with a Cassie Garison kill, the Diplomats then went on a 5-0 run to extend the lead 11-4. Ursinus looked to turn things around, bringing themselves within three at 17-14, but the Diplomats held strong and ended the set with a 5-0 run and kill from Barbara Kapustin to take the first 25-17.
A service ace from Grace Maggiore helped the Diplomats to an early 3-0 lead to start the second game. The Bears were able to come back and tie the frame at 3-3, but F&M went on an 11-1 run that included three straight service aces from Christine Yoo to take the lead at 14-4. The Diplomats kept the pace to finish out the second set 25-9.
The Diplomats quickly got an 8-4 lead with a Yoo ace, but the Bears looked to stay in the match, and a 5-0 run gave Ursinus the 13-12 lead. The set remained even with no team gaining more than a two-point lead and 11 ties, but F&M was able to fight through and a block from Garison and Maggiore finished the frame and gave the Diplomats the match.
Kapustin and Grace Polisano paced the offense with nine kills each. Setter Maggiore recorded a double-double with 30 assists, 11 digs, and six kills. Yoo led the match with five services aces and also tallied six kills. Senior libero Shae Murphy recorded 14 digs and four assists on the day.
