LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall suffered a 68-53 setback to No. 1 Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats dropped to 6-7, 2-4 CC, while the Garnet remained undefeated at 13-0, 6-0 CC.
Scoring came at a premium in the early minutes of the game with Swarthmore holding onto a 9-2 lead seven minutes into the game. The Diplomats outscored Swarthmore 7-2 over the next five minutes to come within two, 11-9, but the Garnet countered with a 14-2 run during the next six minutes for a 14-point, 25-11, lead and went into the break up 29-15.
The Diplomats opened the second with an 8-3 spurt and came within nine, 32-23, with 16:06 on the clock. Swarthmore answered with a 10-0 run for a 19-point lead, 42-23, with 13:05 left to play. F&M came within 13 on few occasions over the eight minutes, but the Garnet maintained a double-digit lead to secure the victory.
Swarthmore outshot F&M 45%-40% from the floor, 82%-41% from the line, and held a slight 35-34 edge on the glass.
The Diplomats return to action on Wednesday at Johns Hopkins for an 8:00 p.m. matchup.
