LEWISBERRY, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall's men's Varsity 8+ boat took first in the Petite Final at Saturday's Mid-Atlantic Rowing Conference (MARC) Championships to lead the Diplomats to an impressive sixth-place showing in the team standings out of 20 competitors.
F&M concluded the Championships with 58 total points, ahead of Johnson & Wales (56) and Adrian (50). Bucknell won the Title with 101 points, followed by George Mason (92) and Marietta (86).
All participating schools, even Division I institutions, are eligible for team scoring in the Championships. The Diplomats' bested out such DI competition as Penn State (37 points), Loyola (27 points) and Maryland (26 points).

Men's Varsity 8+
A boat of Giuseppe Inglima (coxswain), Joel Cannon (8), Lukas Grattan (7), Ben Carroll (6), Seth Sherwood (5), Christian Jones (4), Harris Karlin (3), Ngoun Lay (2), and Brandon Schneider (1) earned a spot in the Varsity 8+ Petite Final after taking third with a time of 7:21 in the day's opening heat.
The Diplomats' strong run saw F&M place ahead of produce better times that Division I opponents Loyola (7:24.84) and Penn State (8:33.04).
In the Petite Final, the Diplomats rolled to a first-place finish out of four boats with a time of 6:42.82. Adrian was close behind at 6:43.95 while Catholic was third at 7:06.96.
Men's Varsity 4+
The Varsity 4+ boat of Meredith Cooney (coxswain), Steven Nicodemo (4), Dylan Smith (3), Muhammad Ahmed Cheema (2), and Carlos Ortiz (1) also earned a trip to the Petite Final with a fourth-place showing and a time of 8:42.49 in their first heat.
F&M followed by capturing fourth in its final event, ending the race at 8:46.18. Stockton led the way with a time of 8:09.95.
Joel Cannon, Harris Karlin, and Ngoun Lay were named MARC Academic All-Conference, which is awarded to rowers who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5, are in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility, and have competed in 75 percent of the varsity competitions or the MARC Championships.
The Diplomats close out their 2019 spring season on May 10-11 at the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia.
