LANCASTER, PA -- Franklin & Marshall College punter Dan Eggertsson (Sr., Royal Palm, FL/Suncoast) has been named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for his performance in a 35-14 victory over Hobart College.
The September 19 Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, he averaged 49.2 yards per punt off four punts for 197 yards, including a 65-yarder, with two downed inside the 20-yard line against the Statesmen. In addition, his only punt of the first half was partially blocked but went 47 yards to inside the 20-yard line and pinned the Statesmen deep in their own territory.
In the latest Centennial Conference statistics, Eggertsson leads the Conference in punting with a 41.5 yard average (15 punts for 622 yards) and point after efficiency (15-for-15). Further, he ranks third in field goals (two), third in field goal percentage (two-for-three, 66.7 percent) and sixth in scoring with 7.0 points per game as Eggertsson has 21 points in three games as the Diplomats have opened the season 3-0 for the first time since 2002.
The honor marks the second time in as many weeks Eggertsson has been named to the D3football.com Team of the Week as he was named at placekicker last week following a 41-21 win at Oberlin College.
Against the Yeomen, he averaged 34.8 yards per punt (five punts for 174 yards) and connected on 28 and 45 yard field goals and as it marked the first time the Diplomats made two field goals in a game since Steve Linebaugh '02 made 24 and 16 yarders versus Johns Hopkins in a 21-20 loss on November 4, 2000.
Historically, Eggertsson's 45-yard field goal marked the fourth longest in program history trailing a 52 yarder by Mark Slevin versus Swarthmore in 1983, a 48-yarder by Mark Slevin versus Ursinus in 1984, a 47 yarder by Slevin in 1984 versus Muhlenberg and ties a 45-yarder by Slevin in 1984 against Georgetown.
For his career, Eggertsson has punted 108 times for 4,044 yards, an average of 37.44 yards per punt, as he moved ahead of Andy Gilburg '00 (37.2) and into second place in career punting average in the history of the Conference behind Jon Bushey '97.
Eggertsson's selection marks the third time in three weeks the Diplomats have placed a player on the D3football.com Team of the Week as tailback Scott Stephen (Sr., Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) earned recognition on the September 5 team following a 35-7 win over Bethany College on September 4.
Franklin & Marshall (3-0, 0-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on September 25 at Carnegie Mellon University. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
