LANCASTER, PA -- Franklin & Marshall College punter Dan Eggertsson (Sr., Royal Palm, FL/Suncoast) has been named to the October 3 D3football.com Team of the Week.
The October 4 Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette NCAA Division III Co-National Special Teams Player of the Week and a member of the October 4 Centennial Conference Special Teams Honor Roll, Eggertsson punted 11 times for 471 yards, an average of 42.8 yards, with a long of 62 yards and four punts inside the 20-yard line to aid in a 15-10 win at Muhlenberg College. Overall, he had punts of 62, 39, 35, 42, 34, 38, 35, 61, 41, 42 and 42 yards (in order) as six of his punts were not returned due to a fair catch by the Muhlenberg return specialist or being downed by the Diplomats' coverage. In addition, he tacked on a 38-yard field goal for the first F&M points of the game.
His 11 punts tied for the fourth most in a single game in school history (behind 13 by Bill Meekings versus Georgetown in 1991, 12 by Andy Gilburg versus Muhlenberg in 2000 and 12 by John Stockdale vs. Albright in 1997) and his 471 punt yards are third in a single game in school history (behind 489 by Andy Gilburg in 2000 versus Muhlenberg and 476 by Bill Meekings in 1991 versus Georgetown).
In the latest Centennial Conference statistics, Eggertsson leads the Conference and ranks fifth in the nation in punting with a 42.2 yard average (31 punts for 1,309 yards) and ranks third in point after efficiency (17-for-18). Further, he ranks fifth in field goals (three), third in field goal percentage (three-for-four, 75.0 percent) and scoring by kick (26 points) and eighth in scoring with 5.2 points per game as the Diplomats have opened the season 4-1 for the first time since 1996.
For his career, Eggertsson has punted 124 times for 4,731 yards with 33 punts inside the 20-yard line, seven fair catches and four touchbacks. For his career, he is averaging 38.15 yards per punt as he is currently 0.25 off the school career punting record of 38.4 held by Jon Bushey and is on pace to erase the single season punt average record of 39.9 held by Bushey from 1996.
Historically, Eggertsson is the first Diplomat in school history named to the D3football.com Team three times in a season as he previously earned honors on September 12 and 19 following victories over Oberlin (41-21 W) and Hobart (35-14 W). In addition, he became the first Franklin & Marshall player to earn National Player of the Week honors from Don Hansen's National Weekly Football Gazette since Bill Stone '03 and Chris Gallino '03 were named National Defensive Player of the Week on September 23 and October 28, 2002, respectively.
Franklin & Marshall (4-1, 1-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on October 9 at home versus 2003 Centennial Conference co-champion Johns Hopkins University. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
