Diplomats Defeat Crusaders in OT

SELLINSGROVE, Pa. – Will Ballantyne's goal 1:27 into the extra period delivered Franklin & Marshall a 9-8 overtime victory over Susquehanna in non-conference men's lacrosse action.  The victory is the fourth straight for F&M as the Diplomats improved to 5-1 on the season. The Crusaders fell to 3-3. 

The Diplomats struck first with a Tim Gaines' goal 4:07 into the game, before Susquehanna answered with four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead at 8:23 in the second quarter.  Evan Baskt found Ben Ross at 4:51 to stop the Crusaders' run at 4:51. SU went up 5-2 with 2:52 remaining to halftime, but Ballantyne fed Kevin Kilpatrick with 33 seconds left to send the game into the break with a 5-3 Crusaders' lead. 

Tristan Miller took a Colin McKew pass and found the back of the net to bring F&M within one, 5-4, midway through the third stanza. Luke Delavan scored a man-up goal five minutes later to give SU a 6-4 edge, before McKew hooked up with Matt Gillian at 1:42 to bring F&M back within a goal, 6-5. 

F&M rallied off three unanswered goals in the first seven minutes of the fourth to go up 8-6 with 8:23 left to play.  Ross found James Wenk 21 seconds into the fourth for the first goal and Ryan Whooley scored at 12:11 to give F&M a 7-6 advantage. Gillian found Harrison Jones for the final goal of the run, before the Crusaders scored two straight to tie the game at eight and send the game into the extra period. 

SU won the faceoff to start overtime and fired a shot seconds later, which was stopped by Cameron Setian. F&M cleared the ball and called a timeout at 3:11. The Diplomats came out and settled into their offense when McKew found Ballantyne for the game-winner. 

Andrew Setian won 12 of the games' 19 faceoffs and picked up nine groundballs. 

Cameron Setian stopped 11 shots to improve to 5-1 while Jordan Daney took the loss for the Crusaders. 

The Diplomats were 21-for-24 on clear attempts and outshot SU 40-28. 

F&M returns to action on Saturday when the Diplomats travel to Muhlenberg for their Centennial Conference opener at 7:00 p.m.
