Diplomats Dominate Devils; Secure Playoff Spot

Video: All three goals

LANCASTER, Pa. – In front of a friendly crowd on senior night, the Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team kicked off homecoming weekend with a 3-0 defeat over Dickinson in Centennial Conference (CC) play Friday evening.  The win secured the Diplomats the number two seed in the CC playoffs.

"Finishing second in a conference that has had three teams nationally ranked all year is a testament to how far this team has united this season," said head coach Dan Wagner.  "We are firing on all cylinders and I am excited to see this team play in the postseason."

The Diplomats put a goal on the board 31:55 into the game on a header from Mike Irving. They took a 2-0 advantage into the break as Charlie Welch finished on a corner kick with just 1:55 remaining in the half.
F&M added another insurance goal in the 60th minute when Matt Krantz assisted Ben Beaver to close out the scoring and secure the win.

In a selfless act of kindness, Zach Zamek left the goal box to give fellow senior Adrian Heredia a chance to play in his last regular season home game.

"At the end of the match I felt it was important to put Adrian in, who is a captain and a critical part of the program, " said Wagner. "It was a difficult decision, because I knew it would keep Zamek from getting the shutout.  It speaks to Zach's great character that he was visually excited for Adrian to play. "

Zamek did pick up his 40th career victory, stopping six shots.  He improved to 8-3-2 on the year.

Zamek is not the only reason F&M's defense has only given up one goal in the last 600:04 minutes of action. Charlie Welch has led a dominant backline all season.

"I was really pleased with the quality of our backline because Dickinson has an explosive offense and has scored a lot goals this season. They are not an easy team to shutout," said Wagner. "Charlie has been great all season and is proving to be one of the premier center backs in the region."

The Diplomats ended the regular season 2-0-2 against ranked teams and look to improve next Saturday in the CC playoffs at Swarthmore.  Their opponent will depend of the outcome Muhlenberg and Johns Hopkins' games tomorrow. Both are battling for the third seed with the Mules controlling their own fate.
