Diplomats Capture Scrapyard Classic Title

LANCASTER, Pa. – The Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team rolled past visiting Stevenson, 3-0, to capture the Scrapyard Classic title on Saturday night at Tylus Field. The Diplomats move to 2-0 on the year with the victory, while Stevenson drops to 1-2.

The Diplomats jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage just over six minutes into the contest. Sophomore Ryan O'Connell launched a long throw-in towards the near post of the Mustang's net, where junior Shawn Ganow was posting up his defender. After an initial deflection off the throw, Ganow turned and one-timed a left-footed blast to the far post netting to put F&M on the board.

Slightly over three minutes later F&M would strike again, this time set up by the foot of O'Connell. The sophomore defender bent a perfect cross to the far post from about 35 yards out that freshman Sam Lane charged towards and buried from just inside the six-yard box for a 2-0 Diplomat edge.

The Diplomats added on another tally in the 64th minute, this time on a nifty set-up by Lane. Lane cleverly shifted by his defender on the left baseline and slid a pass to the center of the box, where sophomore Ben Beaver was all alone and easily found the back of the net to give F&M its final 3-0 margin of victory.

F&M controlled possession of the ball for the majority of play in a physical matchup that saw each team receive three yellow cards, while the Mustangs were also booked with a red card.

Junior goalkeeper Zach Fernberger  posted his first-career shutout victory to pick up the win and move to 2-0 on the year. Senior Ryan Flannelly recorded five saves in goal for Stevenson in the loss.

The Diplomats will hit the road for the first time in 2011 next weekend as they travel to St. Mary's (Md.) for the Seahawk Classic. F&M will square off against St. Mary's (Md.) on Saturday, September 10 at 2:00 pm, before facing Salisbury on Sunday, September 11 at 1:00 pm.
