F&M Handles Cabrini

LANCASTER, Pa. - Ben Beaver tallied two goals and three others found the back of the net as the Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team put together its highest-scoring output of the season in a 5-1 victory over visiting Cabrini in non-conference action on Tuesday night. The Diplomats are now 8-4-2, while the Cavaliers see their three-game winning streak come to a halt and fall to 8-7-1.

The Diplomats gave the Cabrini defense fits all night long as they registered 19 shots, while the Cavaliers managed just seven. Derek Pawlush opened the scoring in the 14th minute to give F&M the early edge. A misclearance by the Cabrini defense left the ball loose near the top of the box and Pawlush was there to clean up the mess for his second score of the season.

F&M kept its foot on the gas in the early-going, striking again less than a minute later. Beaver ran onto a through-ball from Mike Irving deep in the Cabrini defensive zone, dribbled left past goalkeeper Eric Nowicki and buried it into the empty net for a 2-0 F&M lead.

Beaver went on to notch another score in the 36th minute, this time unassisted, following a nifty self-pass around a Cavalier defender. The sophomore forward settled the ball about 35 yards out, cleverly touched it past his defender's left, ran by him on the other side and rocketed a low shot that found the far post and the Diplomats led, 3-0.

The Diplomats took their three-goal advantage into the intermission, but didn't stop there as they managed two second-half scores on a pair of well-placed shots from Eric Elicker and Alex Grassi. Elicker's goal came following a series of crisp passes by the Diplomats near the top of the box. The senior midfielder capped off the superb passing display with a high-arching shot from 20 yards out off a back-pass from Ryan Macomber to push the lead to 4-0.

Grassi made it 5-0 in the 75th minute in nearly the same spot as Elicker's strike. The Diplomats earned a free kick at the edge of the box and Max Watson touched it to Grassi, who steamed forward and blasted a left-footed screamer to the upper-left netting.

The Cavaliers managed to get on the board with just over 10 minutes to play with an impressive finish by Sean Neary off a dish from Christian Martin. Neary sent a shot about 25 yards from goal on the right side that nestled into the far upper corner for the final 5-1 count.

T.J. White earned the win between the pipes for F&M in his second start of the year to improve to 2-0, while Nowicki takes the loss for the Cavaliers and drops to 8-7-1.

F&M returns to Centennial Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Washington College at 7:00 pm.
