CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Mike Irving's tally late in the first half was all Franklin & Marshall needed as it took down host Washington College, 1-0, in Centennial Conference (CC) men's soccer action on Saturday night. The Diplomats move to 9-4-2 (4-3 CC) with the victory, while the Shoremen have now lost five straight and fall to 3-9-2 (1-5-1 CC).
Irving provided the game's lone goal in the 41st minute with a nice follow-up score after a trio of consecutive saves from Washington goalkeeper Chris Phipps. Phipps stymied two Max Watson strikes and an attempt from Ben Beaver before Irving buried the rebound from Beaver's shot to give the Diplomats the advantage just before halftime.
The F&M defense held tough in the second half to preserve its sixth shutout of the year. The Diplomats outshot the Shoremen, 23-16, and also held a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
F&M goalkeeper T.J. White totaled seven saves, including a diving stop to his left on a shot by Zach Stocksdale in the game's final minute - to remain unbeaten (3-0) on the year. Phipps tallied 12 saves in the loss.
The Diplomats return to the pitch on Wednesday, Oct. 26 for a 7:00 pm showdown at Gettysburg in CC action.
