GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Sam Lane headed home the game-winner in the 97th minute as Franklin & Marshall moved one step closer to clinching a spot in the Centennial Conference (CC) playoffs with a 1-0 overtime victory at Gettysburg in CC men's soccer action on Wednesday night. F&M improves to 10-4-2 (5-3 CC) with the win, while the Bullets fall to 6-8-1 (3-4-1 CC) and see their hopes of postseason play fall by the wayside.
After two halves of scoreless play, the two sides headed to overtime and Lane delivered for the Diplomats just over seven minutes into the extra session. David Rosenfeld played a long cross from midfield into the box, where Lane charged onto it and headed a looping shot over Gettysburg goalkeeper Connor Darrell that found the netting to give F&M the dramatic victory.
The Diplomats held the edge in shots, 20-7, and corner kicks, 7-2. Goalkeeper T.J. White (4-0) registered three saves in the victory, while Darrell (6-8-1) stopped six shots in the defeat.
With just one regular season contest to play, a plethora of CC postseason seeding scenarios remain as four teams are fighting for the final three spots in the five-team CC tournament. The Diplomats are now in three-way tie with Swarthmore and Muhlenberg for third place in the conference standings, while Haverford sits in sixth with a 4-4 CC mark.
F&M returns home on Saturday, Oct. 29 for its final regular season contest against second-place Dickinson in a contest with major playoff implications. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
