LANCASTER, Pa. - Ben Beaver delivered the game-winner for the second straight night to lift the Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team past Covenant 1-0 on Saturday night at Tylus Field. The Diplomats move to 2-0 with the victory, while the Scots drop to 0-2.
Beaver's game-winning score marks the 11th such goal of his career, making him the all-time leader in F&M history in game-winning goals. The junior overtakes Brandon Corday '07, who concluded his career with 10, for the top spot.
Just three minutes into the contest, Beaver secured a feed on the left side from Jared Bomba. The forward dribbled towards goal and fired a left-footed strike that nestled into the far-post netting for a 1-0 F&M edge.
The early tally from Beaver would prove to be all the Diplomats needed as neither side was able to find the back of the net for the remainder of play. After a hectic opening few minutes, the pace of the game slowed down and the two sides methodically went back-and-forth, particularly in the second frame. Covenant was not without its opportunities to tie things up, but F&M goalkeeper T.J. White was in the right spot time after time to preserve the clean slate.
White (2-0) was superb in net for F&M, totaling six saves in the shutout win. Scots' goalkeeper Shuler Polk (0-2) suffered the loss, also tallying six saves on the evening.
F&M is back in action next weekend with a pair of games at the Shellenberger Memorial Classic hosted by Lynchburg. The Diplomats take on the host Hornets on Saturday, Sept. 8 at 4:00 p.m. and face off against Roanoke on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
