OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Chase TenBrook registered his first career goal to lift the Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team past Stevenson 1-0 in non-conference action on Wednesday night. The Diplomats move to 6-1 with the victory, while the Mustangs have now lost five straight and drop to 3-5.
It was a pair of freshmen who combined on the lone goal of the evening as TenBrook followed up on a strike from classmate Devon Malfitano in the 40th minute to put the Diplomats on top 1-0 just before halftime.
The Diplomats continued to maintain much of the possession in the second stanza, nearly extending their lead on multiple occasions. In the 50th minute, Mike Irving almost gave F&M a two-goal advantage as he rocketed a right-footed blast from the right side that blew past Stevenson goalkeeper Alex Zeidler and bounced off the post.
Zeidler continually kept the Mustangs in the contest with several impressive stops down the stretch, including back-to-back saves on strikes from Ryan O'Connell with around 15 minutes remaining and a denial of Vince Perry's 1-on-1 chance from the right side in the 77th minute.
The F&M defense was stellar throughout, limiting the Mustangs to just one shot on goal and very few quality chances in the attacking zone.
F&M posted a 20-8 shot advantage, while also holding a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper T.J. White tallied one save in the full 90 minutes of action, earning his second shutout of the year. Zeidler turned away nine shots in a losing effort.
The Diplomats return home on Saturday for a CC matchup against Haverford at 6:00 p.m.
