Diplomats Fall in 2OT

LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 double-overtime decision to visiting Susquehanna in a non-conference battle of regionally-ranked men's soccer squads on Wednesday night at Tylus Field. The Diplomats fall to 9-4 with the defeat, while the Crusaders improve to 10-2.

Tied at 1-1 with time winding down the second overtime, Susquehanna's David Trank rocketed a left-footed blast from about 25 yards out into the upper-right corner of the net to give the Crusaders the dramatic victory.

Trank put the Crusaders on top early with a score just 1:08 into play, but F&M answered back in the 30th minute to even things at 1-1. Ryan O'Connell settled a through-ball from Max Watson while racing down the right sideline and sent a cross to the foot of Sam Lane, who one-timed it home to knot the score at 1-1.

Less than a minute later, David Rosenfeld nearly put F&M on top with a booming free kick from about 35 yards that caromed off both posts but didn't cross the goal line.

A scoreless second half saw the two sides play a bit more defensively than the opening frame, as the teams combined for just six of the games 29 shots in the second stanza.

It was a physical, knock-em-down, drag-em-out contest as the two squads combined for 30 fouls and five yellow cards in the nearly 120 minutes of action.

F&M goalkeeper T.J. White tallied three saves in the loss, while Matt Salsman turned away four shots to earn the win for the Crusaders.

The Diplomats are back in action Saturday at home against Muhlenberg. The Centennial Conference showdown in set for 3:00 p.m. at Tylus Field.
