Diplomats Drop Heartbreaker

BALTIMORE, Md. - Franklin & Marshall dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime decision to host Johns Hopkins in the first round of the Centennial Conference (CC) Men's Soccer Tournament on Wednesday night in Baltimore. The fifth-seeded Diplomats end their season at 12-6, while the fourth-seeded Blue Jays (8-7-1) advance to Saturday's semifinals against top-seeded Swarthmore.

Leading 1-0 with time winding down in regulation, the Diplomats appeared destined for Saturday's semifinal round, but the Blue Jays had other plans as they finished one of their few second-half chances with just over six minutes left in the contest.

After back-to-back saves by F&M goalkeeper T.J. White, JHU's Danny Reategui had his shot deflect off a Diplomat defender and bounce into the right-side netting to even the count at 1-1 and send the game into extra time.

In overtime, JHU's Brandon Sumpio delivered the game-winner with an incredible volley shot from the right side of the box. The senior got his head on an F&M header clearance attempt, raced to his right, and volleyed the ball into the upper corner of the far post to give the Blue Jays the dramatic win.

Jared Bomba put F&M on top in the 19th minute of play off an assist from Mike Iriving. Ryan O'Connell sent a long throw-in into the box that was re-directed by Irving, and Bomba pounced forward and buried a close-range strike to give the Diplomats an early 1-0 advantage.

F&M had several other quality scoring opportunities throughout, particulary in the first half, but were unable to stretch their advantage beyond the one-goal margin. Sitting on a 1-0 lead for much of the contest, the Diplomats effectively limited the Blue Jays' looks at net, but Reategui's tally in the 84th minute gave the hosts new life and they eventually escaped with the victory.

White totaled six saves in the loss, while Hopkins' Nick Cerrone also turned away six shots to earn the victory.

JHU held a slight 16-15 edge in shots, while F&M posted a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
