LANCASTER, Pa. – Second-half scores from Ben Beaver and Connor Finn lifted Franklin & Marshall past visiting Medaille in the season opener for both squads on Friday night at Tylus Field. The win marks the second straight year that the Diplomats (1-0) have opened the season with a triumph over the Mavericks (0-1).
After a sluggish first half from both sides that featured just three total shots and minimal opportunities on net, the Diplomats made the most of their opportunities in the second to pull out the 2-0 victory.
In the 63rd minute, Zach Fried pounced on a loose ball inside the box and blasted a strike towards net. Medaille goalkeeper Tyler Brew sprawled out to his right for the save, but Beaver was in the right place at the right time to deflect the ball into the left side of goal, putting F&M on top 1-0.
F&M continued to create scoring chances as the clock ticked down and grabbed a two-goal lead in the 77th minute on a perfect strike from Finn. Playing in his first collegiate game, the freshman one-timed a deflected clearance from about 25 yards out for a picturesque strike, giving the Diplomats a commanding 2-0 advantage.
Goalkeeper T.J. White was largely unchallenged in the net, earning the shutout win. Brew totaled three saves in the loss for the Mavericks.
The Diplomats held the edge in both shots (9-6) and corner kicks (5-2) in the win.
F&M returns to action tomorrow with a non-conference matchup against Utica at 5:00 p.m. at Tylus Field.
