LANCASTER, Pa. – The No. 8 Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team downed Washington by a 3-0 score on Saturday evening at Tylus field in Centennial Conference (CC) play.
The shutout was the Diplomats (8-0-1, 2-0 CC) seventh of the season, while the Shoremen fell to 4-5, 0-2 CC on the year.
With the score knotted at 0-0 in the 24th minute of the first half, a Washington foul just outside the penalty area led to an F&M free kick from 20 yards out. Four Diplomats surrounded the ball to disguise the opportunity, with Jeremy Levine opting to take the chance on net. The sophomore midfielder lofted his shot into the top-right corner of the goal to put the Diplomats out in front at 1-0.
Three minutes remained on the clock in the half when the Shoremen lined up for a free kick of their own just past midfield and sent an opportunity into the box. F&M goalkeeper Trevor Britton charged from the net to snag the ball out of traffic and preserve the narrow advantage.
In the second, a Levine corner was bounced around in the box before coming out to Devon Malfitano, who fired it into the left side of the net to build on the Diplomats' lead at 2-0.
Britton secured the win and his sixth shutout of the season, while Lin Robinson (0-2) was dealt the loss. The Diplomats' stingy defense did not allow a shot to reach Britton on goal as Washington managed only three shots on the evening.
F&M tallied 12 shots over 90 minutes, led by three from Malfitano. Jared Bomba and Chris Scott each tallied a pair of opportunities. The Diplomats were also dominant on corner kicks at 10-3, including a 6-1 margin in the first.
CC competition continues on Tuesday when F&M travels to face off against Ursinus at 7:00 p.m.
