Maze Scores Two as Diplomats Blank Bears

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Two Robert Maze goals in the opening 12 minutes of action, and a late second-half insurance score, drove the No. 14 Franklin & Marshall men's soccer team past Ursinus with a 3-0 shutout on the road Wednesday evening.

The Centennial Conference (CC) victory improved the Diplomats' record to 6-1-3, 2-0-1 CC while the Bears fell to 3-5, 0-3 CC.

Maze netted his first marker in the eighth minute when Jason Tonelli sent a pass to the front of the goal that the freshman forward tapped in to give F&M a 1-0 lead.

Less than three minutes later, Maze tallied his third of the year by heading in a Ben Draheim cross past the Bears' goalkeeper to increase the advantage to two.

The Diplomats continued to attack offensively throughout the second stanza, eventually striking again in the 81st minute. Ugo Okolie sent a through ball to the right side that was one-timed by Ryan Fincher to the left corner of the net for his first goal of the season and second of his career.

Reingold (6-1-3) recorded his fourth shutout of his senior year by collecting seven saves, including six in the second half, to earn the win, while Vince Maiorino (1-5) suffered the loss after stopping five of eight attempts on goal.

F&M dominated the shot count at 19-8, holding a 12-6 advantage through the final 45 minutes of play. Corners were closer with the edge belonging to Ursinus at 5-4.

Maze paced the offense by recording three shots, followed by Jeremy Levine, Zach Colton and Tonelli with two each.

CC competition continues on Saturday when F&M returns home to host Muhlenberg for a 3:30 p.m. game.
