LANCASTER, Pa. - Franklin & Marshall's wrestling team kept the score close early and battled late but ultimately came up short in a tough 19-12 loss against Hofstra on Saturday evening in Lancaster.
The Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) defeat dropped the Diplomats to 2-5, 0-4 EIWA on the year, while the Pride improved to 5-10, 1-4 EIWA.
Trailing by a 6-0 team score heading into the 141-pound matchup, Wil Gil notched a pair of takedowns and two near fall points to deliver the Diplomats an 11-4 decision and cut the deficit to three.
After Hofstra countered with a decision at 149 pounds, F&M once again fought back when Paddy Quinlan notched the 11-7 decision at 157 pounds to make it a 9-6 match. Quinlan was active in the first frame, collecting three takedowns and a pair of near fall points.
The Pride rattled off three consecutive victories, including a 10-2 major decision at 165 pounds to put the match out of reach for good at 19-6. However, F&M did not go away easily as Philip Robilotto (197) and No. 32 ranked Antonio Pelusi (285) continued to carry the Diplomats with decision wins to end the match.
Robilotto earned a third-period escape to knot his bout at 1-1 and force sudden victory, where he picked up the 3-1 SV-1 win with a takedown. Pelusi landed an early first-period takedown in his contest and held off a late charge to garner the 3-2 decision.
The Diplomats continue action tomorrow, traveling to Bucknell for a 2:00 p.m. matchup with the Bison.
