Pelusi Advances to Championship Semifinals; Three Still Alive at EIWAs

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - Antonio Pelusi pulled off back-to-back overtime wins, including a sudden victory upset of the nation's No. 21 ranked heavyweight, to earn a spot in the 285-pound Championship Semifinals and lead a group of three Franklin & Marshall competitors who advanced out of day one at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships.

Along with Pelusi's 2-0 run in the 285-pound bracket, Wil Gil (141 pounds) and Paddy Quinlan (149 Pounds) will each compete in tomorrow's Consolation Round of Four after accumulating 2-1 records on the day.

Pelusi - Day 1

Pelusi's opening match in session one against Navy's Thomas Ott needed the second round of tiebreakers to be decided. With the match tied at 2-2, neither grappler managed to score in the second sudden victory period. Pelusi followed with a reversal in the next frame but promptly gave up the escape to stay in front at 4-3. However, Pelusi rode out Ott in the second tiebreaker period to hold on for the thriller.

In his next contest, Pelusi was matched up with a familiar foe in the bracket's No. 2 seeded Joey Goodhart from Drexel. The two met back at the 2016 EIWA Tournament, with Pelusi snagging a bid to the NCAA Championships with a win in the Consolation Round of Four.

The rematch on Friday saw the score tied at 1-1 after regulation. Neither grappler scored in sudden victory one, but Goodhart was charged with a key stall warning. Each traded escapes in the tiebreaker one periods before Pelusi secured the win with Goodhart's second stalling in sudden victory two.

Pelusi will return to action tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. to face Brown's Ian Butterbrodt, the bracket's No. 6 seed and the nation's No. 33 ranked heavyweight for a spot in the Championship match. Pelusi can finish no lower than sixth and is guaranteed to place for the third time in his career. The EIWA was awarded four automatic qualifiers for the weight class.

Gil - Day 1

Gil dominated his first Championship round match with two takedowns, a reversal and four near fall points in a 15-3 major over Theo Powers. In his next contest, Gil was matched up with the nation's No. 1 ranked 141-pounder Yianni Diakomihalis of Cornell and fell by an 18-3 tech. fall score.

In Consolations, Gil bounced back with a convincing 16-9 decision over No. 10 seed A.J. Vindici (Penn). Gil recorded three takedowns in the match, doing the most of his damage in the third period with an escape, takedown and four near fall points.

Tomorrow, Gil will take on American's No. 4 seeded Jack Mutchnik. He can finish no lower than eighth and as high as third in the bracket.

Quinlan - Day 1

Paddy Quinlan bounced back from a loss to the 149-pound bracket's No. 1 seed with a first-period pin of No. 8 seed Cole Corrigan from Columbia in the wrestle backs. He followed with a 4-1 decision over Jonathan Furnas of Cornell (No. 7 seed), going ahead early with a first-period takedown, and rolling into the Consolation Round of Four.

Quinlan guaranteed himself a top-eight finish in the Tournament and will face American's Michael Sprague (No. 5 seed) tomorrow.

P. Robilotto - Day 1

Phil Robilotto bounced back from a championship round loss with a dominant win over Penn's Greg Bensley in consolations. Ahead by a 13-3 tally early in the second period, Robilotto landed the takedown and finished off the fall at 3:20.

In his following match against Lehigh's No. 7 seeded John Jakobsen, an early first-period takedown allowed Robilotto to take an early lead but eventually fell by default at the 2:51 mark.
