Big strides are in store for the men's cross country team this year. Under direction of John Stoudt, the teams' strength comes from their experienced runners.
Six of the top seven runners are returning from the previous season giving F&M a seasoned and solid pack. Senior Ryan Bell returns as the number one runner followed by sophomores Greg Duckloe and Angelo Acre.
Duckloe finished the season at Regionals with a time of 27:35 finishing 117th out of 314 runners. Bell finished four seconds behind him to place 123rd. Stoudt is confident in their ability to improve upon last years finishes in the Conference Championship Meet (7th) and the Regional Meet (23rd).
"We had a predominantly freshman team last year,” says Stoudt. “Hopefully, we are a year stronger and more experienced in 2010."
The Centennial Conference preseason polls predicted the Diplomats to finish seventh earning 23 points. Stoudt believes a key to improving that finish is to get stronger each week.
Joining the team will be freshman Dylan Jennings, Jeff Schlossberg, and sophomore transfer Tim Merlino. The sophomore class is loaded with talent returning nine members with one-year experience under their belt. Sophomore members are Angelo Ancre, Francis Blancero, Greg Duckloe, Erik Mariani, Andrew Marra, David Raffman, Ezra Rothman, Joe Strawitz, and Josh Wesalo. Junior Dominic Trombetta will return to the squad alongside junior Trevor Donnelly who will compete in his first season as a Diplomat cross country runner. Entering their last season are senior leaders Ryan Bell and Erik Olsen.
The Diplomats open their season on September 4, 2010 hosting the annual Little Three Meet.
