LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's basketball game away with a 70-63 win against Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon.
The Diplomats improved to 10-9, 7-7 CC while the Garnet dropped to 2-17, 1-13 CC.
The Garnet took an early 7-4 lead, but a Kristin Hamill layup brought F&M back within one at the 6:31 mark. Hamill converted on the and-one play with just over three minutes left, sparking the Diplomats on a 7-0 run that included five points from Lindsey Powers to close out the quarter with an 18-9 lead.
Back-to-back buckets from Haley Pilone increased the deficit to 10 with just over seven minutes left in the second quarter. A three from Sarah Pisani increased the lead to 30-17 while another Pisani three gave F&M a 35-21 edge going into the break.
Swarthmore tallied the first buckets of the second half, but a layup from Kenna Williams kept the Diplomats' advantage at 11 with just over eight minutes left in the third quarter. F&M kept the pressure with a Powers three extended the Diplomats' to 52-37 going into the final frame.
A layup from Hamill at the 8:29 mark sparked F&M on a 6-0 run over the next two minutes to keep the 60-42 advantage. Swarthmore tallied 10 unanswered points to come within eight at the 4:18 mark, but consistent free throw shooting from F&M in the final two minutes helped secure the 70-63 victory.
Hamill led all scorers with 21 points and pulled down 10 boards. Williams followed with 14 points and eight rebounds while Pilone netted 10.
The Diplomats hit the road on Wednesday, traveling to Gettysburg for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
