SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Erin Coverdale notched the lone goal of the game to lift No. 4 Franklin & Marshall 1-0 in overtime over No. 14 Kean on Friday afternoon in the team's 2018 season opener.
The Diplomats improved to 1-0 with the opening-round win at the Connie Harnum Classic, hosted by Susquehanna, marking the six-straight season F&M began its year with a victory. The Cougars dropped to 0-1.
F&M maintained possession after a penalty corner in the 75th minute. Coverdale gained control in the box, dropping the ball in the bottom right corner to give the Diplomats the win in the 77th minute.
Goalkeeper Ilianna Santangelo delivered a stellar performance with nine saves on the day, including a diving save to her left on a penalty stroke with less than two minutes in regulation to force overtime.
The Cougars held the edge in both shots (10-6) and penalty corners (8-7). Santangelo (1-0) earned the win while Kean's Megan Houser dropped to 0-1.
The Diplomats return to action tomorrow, taking on the winner of the Susquehanna/Wilkes game at 3:00 p.m. in the tournament final.
