FREDRICKSBURG, Va. - Franklin & Marshall's No. 4 ranked field hockey team continued to display its defensive prowess with a 2-0 blanking of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon, earning the team's fourth-straight shutout to open 2018.
The non-conference road win propelled the Diplomats to a 4-0 record while the Eagles dropped to 2-2.
Despite holding a 7-3 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corners through the first half, F&M was unable to find the back of the cage before the halftime break.
The Diplomat offense rolled in the second half as Katie O'Loughlin posted the game's opening goal in the 48th minute off an unassisted tally.
The Centennial Conference (CC) record for consecutive shutouts is five and has been accomplished by F&M teams in 2016, 2015, and 2014.
Reining NFHCA DIII Defensive Player of the Week Ilianna Santangelo (4-0) has been in cage throughout the streak, picking up her latest shutout with a two-save effort. Counterpart Jessica Cavolt (2-2) suffered the loss despite a six-save effort.
Overall, the shot count was on the Diplomats' side at 11-3, as well as corners at 9-3. Coverdale led the offensive charge with four shots, followed by Nagle with three. O'Loughlin and Lily Mynott followed with two apiece.
F&M continues its road trip on Wednesday, traveling to Eastern for a 4:00 p.m. game.
