Defense Leads Diplomats Past Generals

LANCASTER, Pa. – No. 3 Franklin & Marshall downed No. 16 Washington & Lee 5-1 in a defensive battle Saturday afternoon at Tylus Field. The Diplomats improved to 2-0 while the Generals dropped to 0-3. 

F&M jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Paige Moriarty picked up her fourth goal of year a little over two minutes into the game. Grace Saliba later found Natalie Delinsky at 10:49 to put F&M up 2-0.   

Claire Jackson made it 3-0 midway through the second half before Gabby Frank put F&M up 4-0 two minutes later. Katie Groenke scored unassisted with 5:22 left in the game for a 5-0 lead and the Generals managed their lone goal with 59 ticks on the clock.

F&M's defense limited the Generals to just seven shots and forced 21 turnovers. Samantha Blicht led the way with two caused turnovers and two ground balls and Sarah Bozzo caused two turnovers as well. Vanessa Budd and Jackson scooped up three ground balls each and Caroline Doran caused a turnover and recorded two ground balls.

Danielle Harrington picked up the win in goal with four saves while Ellie Aburn was saddle with the loss after turning away 13 shots.

F&M outshot W&L 25-7, held a 14-11 edge in ground balls and went 13-for-15 on clear attempts.

The Diplomats return to action next Saturday when F&M hosts Stevenson at 11:00 a.m.
