Diplomats Drop Heartbreaker

Diplomats Drop Heartbreaker

LANCASTER, Pa.—Katie Van Aken scored the game-winning goal 2:40 into overtime, as Haverford defeated Franklin & Marshall 2-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's soccer action Sunday evening at Tylus Field.  With the win, the Fords improve to 7-0-4 (3-0-2 CC), while the Diplomats fall to 5-4-1 (3-3 CC).

In the 93rd minute, Anna Rayne found Van Aken streaking down the left side, and Van Aken's shot beat Diplomats keeper Amanda McGowan to the left corner, keeping the Fords unbeaten on the season.

After a scoreless first half, Haverford opened the scoring in the 56th minute, when the Fords leading scorer Meg Boyer got loose and fired a ball at McGowan.  McGowan made the initial save, but the ball came back to Boyer, who deposited the rebound in the lower right corner of the net.

The goal looked like it would hold up for the lone score of the game, but with two minutes to go, Diplomats forward Alexa Yarish dribbled past several defenders into the box, and blasted a shot that got past Fords keeper Robin Chernow to tie the game.

The Fords dominated play for most of the game, outshooting F&M 15-4 overall, and 4-2 in shots on goal.  Haverford also held a 6-2 advantage in corners.

Chernow improved her record to 7-0-4, making one save.  McGowan made two saves in the losing effort, falling to 5-4-1.

F&M will be back on the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 15, taking on Muhlenberg in CC action in Allentown.  Game time is 4 p.m.
