McGowan’s PK Save Preserves 2-1 Win For Diplomats

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Amanda McGowan's save on an 88th minute penalty kick sealed the 2-1 win for the Franklin & Marshall women's soccer team over McDaniel on Wednesday afternoon in Westminster, Md.  Carley Nicholson scored her second goal of the season and Nancy Epstein notched her first, the game winner, as the Diplomats picked up their first Centennial Conference victory over previously unbeaten McDaniel.  The win brings F&M's record to 1-2-2 (1-1 CC) and drops the Green Terror to 4-1 (1-1 CC).

The Diplomats outshot McDaniel 4-3 in the first half but neither team was able to find the back of the net until McDaniel's Meghan Sturgill scored on a penalty kick in the 76th minute to give the Green Terror the 1-0 lead.  F&M came right back when Nicholson chipped the ball in top shelf on a Kim Kornbluth pass from the left wing, just two minutes after the Sturgill goal, to tie the game 1-1.

Not content with the possibility of their third tie of the season, Epstein ricocheted the ball off of the crossbar and past McDaniel goalkeeper Jan Woolley in the 80th minute to give the Diplomats the 2-1 lead.  The score was the junior midfielder's first of the season.

McGowan recorded four saves on the day, but saved her best for last when a late F&M foul gave McDaniel a golden opportunity to tie up the game on a penalty kick.  The junior goalkeeper held her ground and came up with an unbelievable to save to preserve the victory.

Each squad registered nine shots on the day, while McDaniel held the edge in corner kicks 3-1.

The Diplomats return home this Saturday with a CC match against Ursinus at Tylus Field.  The game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
