LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's women's soccer team battled Muhlenberg to a 0-0 2OT tie in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday night at Tylus Field. The draw brings the Diplomats record to 2-4-5, 1-3-3 CC, while the Mules move to 6-6-2, 4-2-1 CC.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first half, with strong play from F&M's defense limiting Muhlenberg to just one shot on goal. The Diplomats offense was able to fire off four shots in the first, however none made their way to Mules goalkeeper Francesca Cobuzzi.
In the second, Muhlenberg narrowly scored the first goal of the game when a shot by Leah Messler hooked to the upper right corner of the net. F&M goalkeeper Amanda McGowan adjusted quickly to the shot and made a spectacular diving save to preserve the tie. The Diplomats had a scoring opportunity of their own in the 60th minute when Jen Korngut found open space and narrowly missed the net. Korngut's shot sailed wide to the left side of the goal. F&Ms next scoring chance came in the 72nd minute when a Nicole Rynecki header off of a corner kick missed wide of the net.
Both squad's defense remained strong in the overtime periods, as scoring opportunities were limited on either side of the field. The Diplomats made a late push in the second overtime to put a goal on the board by firing off three shots, but were unable to find the net.
F&M outshot the Mules 5-1 during the overtime periods. Both teams registered 10 shots on the game, with Muhlenberg holding the edge on shots on goal, 5-2.
McGowan notched her fourth shutout of the season, making five saves during the match.
The Diplomats take to the road this Wednesday with a non-conference game against Richard Stockton. The contest is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
