LANCASTER, Pa. – An Alexa Yarish goal at the 116th minute broke a 0-0 tie in 2OT to give the Franklin & Marshall women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Scranton on Friday afternoon at Tylus Field.
With just under four minutes remaining in the second overtime and with the score deadlocked at 0-0, Yarish found open space to the right of the net and sent a ball on goal that careened off the Royals' keeper to give the Diplomats a win in their opening game of the season.
F&M registered eight shots on the day, compared to 10 from Scranton, but held the edge on corners at 7-3.
Amanda McGowan (1-0) stood tall in net, registering six saves on the day for her 14th career shutout. The senior goalkeeper picked up a number of key saves, including a pair of stops in overtime.
The Royals came out strong in the opening half with multiple scoring opportunities early on. Five minutes in, McGowan was forced to come out of the net to cut off a chance by Christina Akalski of Scranton that nearly found the back net.
Only eight minutes later, a Royals breakaway looked destined to force a showdown between a Scranton attacker and McGowan before Sarah Mischianti broke up the opportunity with a well-timed slide that knocked the ball out of bounds.
Rynecki provided a solid performance in the contest, leading the team in shots with three.
The Diplomats return to action tomorrow at home, facing off against Alma in non-conference play at 3:00 p.m.
