SALEM, Va. – Ashley Barnes scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to give Roanoke the win over the Franklin & Marshall women's soccer team in non-conference action on Saturday evening. The loss drops the Diplomats' record to 1-2, while the Maroons improved to 3-0.
Just a minute and a half into double overtime, Barnes knocked in an unassisted goal into the right side of the net to give Roanoke the victory.
Early on, 10:38 into the first, the Maroons had an opportunity to score when Marlana Barnard ripped a shot, but Caroline Letner was there for the save. Later, in the 28th minute, Roanoke's Sierra Lynn Johnson had another chance to score, but Letner, who was strong all night, made another save and kept the game tied at 0-0.
F&M did not see many scoring chances, but in the 63rd minute, Spencer Plante got a shot off, but Roanoke goalie Carolyn Sarbacher made one of her two saves to keep the game scoreless.
In the first OT, (91st minute) the Diplomats' Sarah Mischianti was given a corner kick, however nothing transpired as good Maroon defense kept the game knotted at 0-0. Maroon midfielder Barnes eventually came through for her first goal of the season in double OT to push Roanoke past F&M.
Letner (1-2) was impressive between the pipes, stopping six of seven shots on the night, while Sarbacher (3-0) notched two saves.
The Diplomats return to action tomorrow at the Roanoke Invitational when F&M battles Lynchburg at 2:30 p.m.
