ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – Reanna Leoni notched a second-half score and the Franklin & Marshall defense allowed just three shots on goal in a 1-0 shutout of Eastern on Tuesday afternoon.
The non-conference road victory improved the Diplomats' record to 6-8-1 while the Eagles fell to 7-6-4.
Both teams came out firing in the early going with strong looks on net. Eastern nearly struck first in the 18th minute with an opportunity in the box, however, F&M's Kyra Judge was there to turn back the chance with a header on the goal line.
The Diplomats lit the scoreboard in the second half when Leoni broke away down the field and tallied an unassisted marker, her 10th of the year, for the eventual game-winner. Leoni became the first member of the program since 2004 to register double-digit goals in a season.
Eastern had a chance to tie the score in the 88th minute with a free kick from 25 yards out, but the opportunity sailed over the top corner of the goal.
Goalkeeper Gabby Panayotakis (6-8-1) earned her sixth shutout of the year after recording two saves in 90 minutes of action. Her counterpart Adrianna Rowlands (7-6-4) was charged with the loss despite a nine-save effort.
Shots were dominated by the Diplomats at 17-8 while corners were closer at 4-3 in favor of F&M. Leoni led the offense with six shots, followed by Nicolette Runko with four. Allison Klei and Isabella Raspa each had two.
The Diplomats conclude the 2017 season on Saturday, traveling to No. 10 Johns Hopkins for a 1:00 p.m. game.
