Diplomats Take Doubleheader

CLERMONT, Fla. – Franklin & Marshall made it three wins in a row Wednesday afternoon in a doubleheader with Minnesota-Morris and Thiel. The Diplomats (4-6) needed just five innings to take a commanding 8-0 shutout over the Cougars (0-4), and took the second game from the Tomcats 5-3.

In the first game, F&M got an early 2-0 lead, with two runs in the first two innings. Samantha Ginder drilled an RBI double to center field to plate Malorie Sassaman, while in the bottom of the second, the Diplomats found their second run from Alicia Kukoda who touched home off of an error from the catcher.

F&M scored six more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-0 advantage. With the bases loaded Megan Pauley singled up the middle to score Kukoda from third. The next batter, Danielle Murphy, hit a ground-out RBI to second base to bring home Ashley Hartshorn and bring the game to 4-0.

Sarah Kirk kept things going for the Diplomats, driving in two with double, touching the plate on the play was Pauley and Julianne Whitleigh. Ginder completed the scoring for F&M with a two-run homerun over the left field fence, scoring was Sarah Kirk.

The Diplomats took care of the first three batters in the top of the fifth ending the game due to the eight-run rule. F&M completed its first shut-out of the season with freshman pitcher Justine Lohrey getting her first colligate win, pitching a complete game with zero runs, two hits, and six strikeouts.

Ginder was 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI's, Kirk added two RBI's with her two hits on the day, while Pauley and Murphy each added an RBI in the win.

The Cougars, were led by Kelsey Draper who was 1-for-2 on the day. Draper also pitched 3.1 innings, giving up eight hits, seven runs, and striking out three batters.

In the second game, the Diplomats started the scoring in the bottom of the second and touched home over each of the next four innings. With the bases loaded, pitcher Amanda Callahan walked Pauley that brought home Kukoda from third to put the Diplomats up 1-0 heading into the top of the third.

F&M's next two runs came in the bottom of the third as Kukoda reached on an error from the third basemen that plated Kirk, the last run reached home when Laura Wagoner singled to center field, bringing Ginder across the plate.

The Diplomats kept the runs coming through the next two innings, scoring two more runs to lead 5-0 going into the sixth. Sassaman reached on an error from second to plate Pauley in the fourth, while Kukoda set herself up with a triple to right center and was eventually brought in from Wagoner's single to left center, for her second RBI of the game in the fifth.

Thiel (0-4)tried to use a comeback in the sixth and seventh innings but fell short by converting only three runs. In the top of the sixth, Tomcat's Danielle Massengill tripled to center field and was later plated off of Ashley Dolan's single.

Thiel's final runs came in the top of the seventh with two runs touching home. Morgan White and Becky Betteridge each found home but it was not enough as Dolan lined out to shortstop to end the game.

Wagoner led the Diplomats with three hits and two RBI's, while Kukoda was 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI.

Nicole Casey pitched a complete game, allowing eight hits, three runs, and four strikeouts in the win.

The Tomcat's were paced by Dolan who was 2-for-4 on the day driving in one RBI, Massengill and Ashley Ames each added an RBI.

Callahan took the loss, pitching six innings, giving up six hits, and five runs.

The Diplomats wrap up their spring break trip tomorrow afternoon. F&M is set to play Ithaca at 2:30 pm and Bowdoin at 7 pm.
