Diplomats Split with Red Devils

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall split a doubleheader with Dickinson in Centennial Conference (CC) softball action on Saturday afternoon. The Diplomats (13-18-1, 5-9 CC) dropped the first game 3-0, before bouncing back with a 3-2 victory in game two.

In the first game, both teams remained scoreless until the top of the third inning when Dickinson (11-25, 7-9 CC) got on the scoreboard off of a Carly Jordan two-run homer to left field that put the Red Devils up 2-0.

The final run of the game came in the fifth frame as Dickinson took a 3-0 lead when Katie Swade touched home for an unearned run. The Red Devils held F&M scoreless through the rest of the game to claim the victory.

Justine Lohrey (3-7) took the loss, throwing a complete game for the Diplomats and allowing three runs on eight hits.

Chelsea Homa (8-8) earned the win for Dickinson, allowing just five hits, while striking out nine batters in seven innings.

In the second game, F&M broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth frame as Sarah Kirk touched home off a passed ball, giving the Diplomats a 3-2 advantage. The Diplomats then held the Red Devils scoreless in the seventh to earn the win.

F&M got two runs in the bottom of the third frame to take a 2-0 lead. Ashley Hartshorn tripled to right center to bring home Rachel Laufer, and later crossed the plate herself off of an Alicia Kukoda single to the right field.

The Red Devils battled back over the next two innings, plating two runs of their own to tie the contest at 2-2. Dickinson's first score came off of a wild pitch that brought home Swade in the fourth, while Reiva Keith evened things up with an unearned run in the fifth.

Kaitlin Zampino (2-4) recorded the complete-game win for F&M, giving up three hits, two runs and one walk while striking out one.

Homa (8-9) picked up the loss for the Red Devils, pitching a total of 13 innings on the day. Homa gave up three hits, three runs, and one walk.

Hartshorn was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI, while Kukoda recorded a hit and an RBI for the Diplomats.

The Diplomats return to action on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader at York (Pa.). Game one is set for 3:30 pm.
