Series History: The Diplomats head down to Florida for 10 games in a five-day span when F&M plays in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Competition begins Sunday when the Diplomats take on Kenyon, a team that beat F&M last season in the teams' first-ever matchup.

The second contest on Sunday begins a stretch of four games where F&M battles teams that the Diplomats have never faced before, which include Salem, Mount Mary, St. Mary's (Ind.), and Mt. St. Mary (N.Y.). On Tuesday, F&M will take on Ohio Wesleyan, a team who owns a 1-0 record against the Diplomats, followed by New Jersey City, a squad that F&M defeated 7-3 last season.

After a matchup against Wartburg on Thursday, the Diplomats close out the spring trip on Friday against Rockford, a team that F&M beat 5-2 last season, and Wisconsin-Superior who holds a 1-0 record against the Diplomats.

Last Week: The Franklin & Marshall softball team opened up its 2014 season on Sunday against Randolph-Macon in non-conference action, falling 10-1 (five innings) in game one of the doubleheader, followed by a 9-1 (five innings) loss in the nightcap. The Diplomats' record fell to 0-2, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 5-1.

In game one, Randolph-Macon struck first in the bottom of the second with a two-run double to take a 2-0 lead.

Down 6-0 in the top of the fifth, F&M got on the board when a Malorie Sassaman groundout scored Kelly Van O'Linda to cut the deficit to 6-1. But, the Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 10-1 lead and put the game out of reach.

Ashley Hartshorn recorded the lone hit for the Diplomats, while Taylor Balmaz notched three hits for Randolph-Macon.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets scored early again, as Jenna Best singled in the bottom of the second to give Randolph-Macon a 1-0 lead. After a walk with the bases loaded made the score 2-0, a Christa Simon triple to left field cleared the bases and gave the Yellow Jackets a 5-0 advantage.

In the top of the fifth, Sassaman reached on an error to score Van O'Linda to cut the lead to 7-1, but it was not enough as Randolph-Macon extended the lead in the bottom of the fifth and went on to win 9-1.

Sam DeNoville, Hartshorn, and Sarah Kirk each recorded a hit for F&M.

Record Book: Malorie Sassaman sits in fifth place on the F&M career hits list with 120. The program record belongs to Lauren Incorvaia (2006-09), who notched 157. Sassaman is also tied for ninth all-time in doubles with 22, while the program record holder Jen Fried tallied 36 from 2001-2004.
