LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall cruised past Cairn in both games on Thursday afternoon in non-conference softball action. The Diplomats defeated the Highlanders 8-0 in six innings in game one before shutting out Cairn again by a score of 13-0 in five innings in the nightcap. With the two victories, F&M improved to 12-2, while the Highlanders fell to 0-16.
In game one, the Diplomats had a huge second inning, sending 11 to the plate and tallying seven runs. After Karly Newcomb reached base on a fielder's choice to make it 1-0, Melissa Bollmeyer worked a walk to increase the lead to 2-0. Erin Russell stepped up to the plate next and hit a two-RBI single to right field, making it a 4-0 contest. Crystal Good then knocked an RBI-single to center for a 5-0 lead before Megan Ryan ripped a double to center field, scoring two runs and putting F&M in complete control at 7-0.
The Diplomats tacked on an extra run in the eighth, while Katie Wenger and Isabel Schaefer combined for the one-hit shutout. The starting pitcher Wenger went three innings and gave up the lone hit and Schaefer also tossed three innings, striking out seven of the nine batters she faced, to earn her fifth victory of the season.
Russell, Good, and Ryan had two hits apiece, while Russell tallied three RBI's.
In the second game, F&M scored earlier and often, plating five runs in the bottom of the first beginning with an RBI-single from Russell. After Ryan reached on a fielder's choice and a throwing error allowed Russell to score to make it 2-0, Samantha Burns singled up the middle to plate Ryan for a 3-0 Diplomats advantage. Kathleen Zogorski followed with a two-RBI double to left field to give F&M an early 5-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second, after Russell's single scored Bollmeyer for a 6-0 advantage, the Diplomats struck again when Ryan launched a two-run homerun over the fence in left-center field, making it 8-0. F&M started to pour it on in the third thanks to three consecutive triples from Zogorski, Kelly Van O'Linda, and Bollmeyer, as the Diplomats forced the mercy rule again, this time in five innings, and went on to win 13-0.
Bollmeyer notched three hits and score three runs, while Russell had two hits, two RBI's, and two runs. Ryan also registered two hits and four RBI's, while Zogoroski finished with two hits and two RBI's as F&M pounded out 13 hits.
Starting pitcher Ryan (3-0) was stellar, going three innings while striking out four and not allowing a hit. Justine Lohrey came in to relieve Ryan and was also dominant, allowing just one hit in two innings of work while recording three punchouts.
The Diplomats jump back into Centennial Conference (CC) action this Saturday when F&M travels to Swarthmore for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
