SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Isabel Schaefer led the Franklin & Marshall softball team to a sweep of Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) action on Saturday afternoon. Schaefer blanked the Garnet 6-0 in a game one shutout before tossing five innings of shutout softball in the second game, en route the Diplomats' 13-0 win in six innings in the nightcap. F&M, who has recorded four consecutive shutouts, improved to 14-2, 4-0 CC, while Swarthmore fell to 4-10, 0-6 CC.
In game one, F&M set the tone right away with an RBI-single from Crystal Good to give the Diplomats an early 1-0 advantage. After Schaefer breezed through Swarthmore's lineup in the first three innings, F&M got on the board again in the bottom of the third when Patricia Crigler singled to third base to score Good and make it a 2-0 game.
The Diplomats tacked on two more in the top of the fifth, beginning with Katie Wenger's RBI-single to center, followed by Kathleen Zogorski's RBI-single to right center to increase the lead to 4-0. Samantha Burns added some insurance in the top of the sixth with a two-RBI single through the left side as F&M went on to win 6-0.
Schaefer continued her dominant freshman campaign, throwing a complete-game shutout giving up three hits while striking out seven, to earn her sixth win. The Diplomats' offense totaled 14 hits and everyone in the starting lineup recorded a hit, including three from Crigler, and two from Erin Russell, Good and Burns.
In game two of the doubleheader, F&M struck early again when Good doubled to left to plate Melissa Bollmeyer and give the Diplomats a 1-0 lead. In the top of the second, Bollmeyer hit an RBI-single to left filed and Zogorski scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. Russell added an RBI-single up the middle for a 4-0 advantage.
Crigler ripped an RBI-double to left in the top of the third for a 5-0 lead, followed by a single from Wenger to make it 6-0. Later in the inning, with Zogorski on first and Wenger on third, Zogorski stole second and was thrown out, however Wenger was able to score on the plat to make the score 7-0.
F&M lit up the scoreboard again in the top of the sixth beginning with a Good RBI-single, followed by Megan Ryan's two-RBI single to center. Karly Newcomb stepped up to the plate as a pinch hitter and roped a bases-clearing double to center field to score three more Diplomats and give F&M an overwhelming 13-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Justine Lohrey struck out the side and forced the mercy rule.
Schaefer (7-1) got the start again from inside the circle and was brilliant, tossing five innings of shutout ball while giving up five hits and striking out three. F&M's offense was in double digits in hits again with 11, as Good, Ryan, and Crigler each recorded a pair, while Bollmeyer scored three runs.
The Diplomats are back in action on Tuesday when F&M welcomes Washington College to Lancaster for a doubleheader at Baker Campus Field with game one beginning at 3:00 p.m.
