LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's softball team dropped both games against McDaniel in its Centennial Conference (CC) opener on Thursday afternoon. The Diplomats fell in a hard-fought 10-8 loss in the first game before losing 5-0 in the second.
F&M dropped to a 5-9, 0-2 CC record while McDaniel improved to 8-10, 2-0 CC.
Game 1: McDaniel 10, F&M 8 – (7 Innings)
McDaniel turned the heat on in the fourth inning, scoring six runs off seven hits, taking a 6-1 advantage.
The Green Terror extended their lead in the fifth with an RBI single to bring the deficit five.
The Diplomats fought back with five runs in the fifth to tie the game at 7-7. Starting at the top of the order, F&M got three runners on base with no outs. Sammy Burns picked up the walk to bring Clemens home. Correa singled up the middle to advance runners and drive in Erin Russell. Aggressive base running on a wild pitch from Correa, Gabby Goodwin, and Piccinich gave the Diplomats another score. Crystal Good delivered the tying strike with a two-RBI single to right field.
McDaniel responded with two runs in the sixth to take back the lead and tallied an RBI single in the seventh to reach 10 runs.
F&M responded in the seventh, with Ella Glenn on third, Clemens notched a single down the left line to bring the Diplomats within two. F&M rallied three-straight hits and a walk to get the tying run on second with the bases loaded and two outs, but McDaniel was able to take the 10-8 victory.
The Green Terror held the slight edge in hitting 17-14. Russell and Piccinich led the offense, both with 3-for-4 performances while Correa and Good finished with two RBIs apiece.
Wenger (2-5) pitched 3 1/3 innings for the loss while McDaniel's Valerie Lamb (3-3) earned the winning, tossing for 2 1/3 innings.
Game 2: McDaniel 5, F&M 0 – (7 Innings)
McDaniel took a quick lead to start the second game with two outs, delivering an RBI single to get on the board.
Burns opened the second inning with a single down the left side. Correa grounded out to the shortstop looking to get Burns in a scoring position, but the Diplomats were unable to convert.
The Green Terror expanded the deficit to two in the fourth inning with an RBI single to left field.
McDaniel delivered the final blow in the fifth with a three-run homer to extend the score to 5-0.
Correa led with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate while Burns went 1-for-2.
Izzy Schaefer (3-4) took the loss after tossing for 4 1/3 innings and recording two strikeouts while McDaniel's Cassie Rickrode garnered the win, throwing for seven innings and tallying six strikeouts.
The Diplomats continue CC action on Saturday at Haverford with a doubleheader beginning at 11:30 a.m.
