LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall's volleyball team won a crucial Centennial (CC) matchup against McDaniel on Wednesday evening, 3-1 (26-24, 14-25, 25-16, 25-14).
The Diplomats improved to 11-6, 3-1 CC while the Green Terror dropped to 14-2, 3-1 CC.
McDaniel came out and quickly took a 6-2 lead off errors from F&M. Three service aces from Delaney Hahn helped the Diplomats take the lead and bring the score to 8-6. Sparked by a kill from Barbara Kapustin, F&M went on a late 5-0 run to take the lead at 24-23, and a service ace from Grace Maggiore sealed the set 26-24.
The Green Terror came out looking for vengeance to start the second frame, quickly taking a 6-1 lead. F&M looked to turn things around with a service ace from Cassie Garison to bring the score 11-5, but a late surge would propel McDaniel to finish the set 25-14.
Play remained even to start the third game, but a Hahn kill sparked the Diplomats on a 4-0 run to extend the lead, 13-7. A late 6-1 burst, that included a kill from Christine Yoo, brought the advantage to 22-11, and an error from the Green Terror finished the frame in F&M's favor.
McDaniel looked to force a fifth set, starting with a 6-4 lead in the fourth, but a 10-0 run with Gabby Mavroidis behind the service line, including four aces from the freshman, gave the Diplomats the 14-6 lead. The Green Terror looked to recover, but a kill from Yoo started F&M on a 5-0 run to keep McDaniel at bay with a score of 22-12. Yoo finished the set with a kill bringing the score to 25-14 and giving the Diplomats the match.
Freshman setter Maggiore led the way with a double-double of 40 assists and 12 digs. Hahn and Kapustin paced the offense; each recording 10 kills on the day. Hahn also tallied eight digs and three service aces. Mavroidis led the match with five aces and tallied 10 digs.
F&M continues CC play, traveling to Ursinus on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. contest.
