Coached by Ed Woge, the 1985 women’s cross country team brought the first NCAA Division III National Championship trophy to Lancaster. The team earned its fourth-straight MAC championship, and second consecutive NCAA Mid-East Regional Championship on their way to the national title.

The team won five invitational meets that season, went 8-0 in dual meets, and placed fifth at the Division I-heavy Paul Short Memorial Invitational.

Lois Lucente and Amanda Shaw paced the team. Both were tabbed All-Americans finishing in fourth and seventh place at the National Championship meet. Their efforts helped F&M blow out the competition with 73 team points. The next closest team, St. Thomas, scored 81. The win was F&M’s first championship won in competition. The 1952 soccer team was declared national champions by a vote. Lucente and Shaw are both Hall of Famers.

In addition to being excellent runners, the team consisted of excellent people who volunteered, during their season, to help children in special education.
