His only loss was to Dave Brand, an Olympic wrestler. The second time they met, Monk pinned him in 33 seconds. He also competed in gymnastics and in swimming, and was a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. He earned his bachelor's degree as an economics major. He coached the Harrisburg YMCA wrestling team to two state championships and won tow state titles himself. He won the national "Y" 175-pound title while he wrestled at 145 pounds. He also wrestled for the undefeated Chapel Hill Navy team. During World War II, he was an instructor in the Navy V-5 program at Annapolis where he served with the late "Bear" Bryant and, as he says, other notables. He is retired from his position as a district representative for the Louisiana Credit Union League in New Orleans where he and his wife, Alice, live.
