ERIE, PA -- Joe Perretta (So., Havertown, PA/Haverford) went 2-1 at 141-lbs as the Franklin & Marshall wrestling team fell to 2-3 on the year with losses to Slippery Rock, Mercyhurst and Cleveland State at Mercyhurst in dual meet action.
Entering the meet with a 2-0 record following defeats of East Stroudsburg and Princeton, the Diplomats suffered their first loss of the season as Slippery Rock rolled to a 30-12 victory.
For Franklin & Marshall, RP Norley (Jr., Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) pinned Shawn Adams at 197 lbs. at the 6:52 mark for the Diplomats' first points of the meet to close within 30-6 before Joe McGuigan (Fr., Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) claimed the heavyweight match by forfeit for the 30-12 final.
Against Mercyhurst, Perretta pinned Jeff Monsman in 4:11 to pull the Diplomats within 8-6 before the Lakers Will Tedder decisioned Matt McConnell (Sr., Kennett Square, PA/St. Marks) 10-1 at 149 to build a 12-6 Mercyhurst lead. However, the Diplomats roared back behind Mike Parziale (So., Woburn, MA/Woburn) and Ted Seemuller (Sr., Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) who recorded decisions at 157 and 165 to build a 13-12 Franklin & Marshall lead.
The lead ballooned to 16-12 following the 174 match as Nate Schy (Sr., Willow Grove, PA/Hatboro Horsham) picked up a 3-1 decision over Frank Zatta before Mercyhurst responded with a victory by pin at 184 as Ben McAvinew took Ben Evans (Jr., Yardley, PA/Peddie School) to the mat at the 1:43 mark for an 18-16 Lakers lead. Mercyhurst added decisions at 197 and heavyweight for the 24-16 final.
In the final match of the day, Rich Gebauer (Jr., South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) captured the 133 lbs match by injury default to knot the score at 6-6, but Cleveland State captured seven of the final eight matches for a 30-9 victory. At 141, Perretta earned a tight 3-2 decision over Tom O'Brien as Franklin & Marshall took a 9-6 lead. However, Matt DePolo tied the match with a 5-4 decision over Greg Soufleris (So., Parkland, FL/Cardinal Gibbons) at 149 before Cleveland State captured the final six matches with three decisions and three majors for the 30-9 final.
Franklin & Marshall (2-3) will continue the season on December 28-29 at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, North Carolina before a few wrestlers compete in the prestigious Midlands Tournament in Evanston, Illinois on December 29-30.
