NEWPORT NEWS, VA - #1 seed Franklin & Marshall's Mike Parziale (Jr., Woburn, MA/Woburn) won 19-4 for a technical fall over Reuben Russell at 157-lbs. to lead the Diplomats to a 29-15 win over the host Newport News Apprentice School Builders in the opening round of the American College Division at the 2005 Virginia Duals.

Ranked #19 in the nation in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association poll, Parziale's victory upped his record to 19-4 on the year and raised his career mark to 66-22 to move to within two wins of surpassing John Johnston '89 for eighth in career victories at Franklin & Marshall College.

The Diplomats (3-4) took the lead from the opening match as Trent Dixon (So., Baltimore, MD/Eastern Tech) downed Josh Flint 11-9 at 125 lbs. before Rich Gebauer (Jr., South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) decisioned Jon Glavin 9-5 at 133 lbs.

The Apprentice School responded as Brad Glavin won 18-7 for a major decision over Steve Gregory (So., Winchester, MA/Winchester) before F&M's Andrew Smith (Fr., Annapolis. MD/Annapolis) won by injury default over Dave Gillis.

Following Parziale's victory at 157 lbs., Matt Veres (Jr., Phillipsburg, NJ/Blair Academy) handled Jovon Butler 9-7 at 165 lbs. Eric Lybarger won 18-1 for a technical fall over Matt Goggin (Fr., Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) before Chris Richey (Fr., Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) won 10-9 over Justin Gilliard at 184 lbs.

Larry France pinned Glenn Martin (Fr., Winston-Salem, NC/Parkland) in 3:43 at 197 lbs. and Shawn Coughlin (So., Berkley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) pinned Cecil Lee in 34 seconds at heavyweight to round out the matches.

The win sets up a matchup versus #5 seed Duquesne University that defeated #4 seed Brockport State in the opening round. The winner of the F&M-Duquesne match will then face the winner of a matchup between #2 seed South Dakota State and #3 Davidson College for the 2005 Virginia Duals title.
