LANCASTER, PA - Kelly Landman (So., Paoli, PA/Conestoga) and Jenna Walters (So., Hershey, PA/Hershey) both won two individual events as the #15 ranked Franklin & Marshall College women's swimming team defeated Carnegie Mellon 115-90.
Historically, with the win Franklin & Marshall improved to 19-2 in its last 21 dual meets as the Diplomats only losses have come against Johns Hopkins University (111-89 on January 30, 2004 at JHU and 151-111 on October 30, 2004 in Lancaster). The run marks the best two-year record by a Franklin & Marshall College women's swimming team erases the previous mark of 19-6 held by the 2003 (8-5) and 2004 (11-1) Diplomats based on winning percentage (90.5 to 76.0).
The win also improves Franklin & Marshall's record to 2-3 all-time against the Tartans since the series began in 1999 as F&M knocked off Carnegie Mellon 136-126 in Pittsburgh on October 18 last year.
The Diplomats wasted little time in taking the lead in the meet as the team of Lisa Hertz (So., Ocean Pines, MD/Stephen Decatur), Elizabeth Kraljic (Jr., Hackensack, NJ/Immaculate Heart), Dana Marinin (Jr., Muncy, PA/Millville) and Walters won the 200 medley relay in 1:53.83.
Following a win by Anna Kochalko (11:07.85) in the 1000 free to edge out four Diplomats who went 2-3-4-5 in the event, Walters returned to the pool to win the 200 free in 1:59.17 to edge out runner-up and teammate Jessica Nonemaker (Jr., Chambersburg, PA/Mercersburg Academy) who placed second in 2:011.32.
F&M added to the lead in the 50 free as Hertz touched in 25.21 to win the event before Landman and Kraljic finished first (2:14.47) and second (2:15.28) in the 200 IM. Landman returned to the pool to record her second straight victory as she edged out CMU's Samantha Monda (1:01.65) and Marinin (1:01.97) with a winning time of 1:01.25.
The Tartans snapped F&M's streak of individual victories in the 100 free as Lauren Connell held off Nonemaker 55.09 to 55.86. Emily Tong repeated the feat in the 100 back surviving a challenge from Hertz 1:01.12 to 1:01.79, but Walters crushed the field in the 500 free by nearly eight seconds with a time of 5:18.94 for another Franklin & Marshall victory.
The Diplomats clinched the victory in the 100 breaststroke as Kraljic and Rachel Army (So., Pomfret, CT/Pomfret) placed first (1:09.09) and second (1:12.05).
Leading 111-77 entering the 200 free relay, the F&M team of Sara Moser-Cohen (Jr., Fairhaven, NJ/Marine Academy of Science), Nonemaker, Marinin and Landman touched the wall in 1:44.88 to finish second and round out the meet for the Diplomats.
Franklin & Marshall (8-1, 6-0 Centennial Conference) will continue the season on February 5 at home versus Gettysburg College in the Centennial Conference and regular season finale. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
