LANCASTER, PA - The United States Military Academy at West Point used three major decisions, two pin falls, a technical fall, a forfeit and three decisions to defeat Franklin & Marshall College 44-0 in wrestling in the Mayser Center.
A battle among two Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association members with storied histories in the sport, Army (1-0-1) denied Franklin & Marshall (0-1-0) the 600th win in program history as the Diplomats stand at 599-470-21 in 80 seasons.
Historically, the match marked the 28th meeting between the two programs since their first meeting on January 15, 1926 at West Point.
The holder of a 20-7-1 advantage in the series, Army has won the last 15 meetings in the series since Franklin & Marshall handled the Black Knights 26-6 in West Point in 1939. Further, F&M has not defeated Army in Lancaster since March 7, 1936 when the Diplomats concluded the 1935-36 season with a 34-0 rout of Army.
In the 2005 match, Army jumped out to a 6-0 lead as Will Simpson pinned Doug Ritchey (Fr., Curryville, PA/Central) at 5:30 after leading 8-0 in the 125 lbs. match. The lead expanded to 10-0 as Frank Baughan used four takedowns and a near fall to defeat Chris Kelly (Fr., Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) 11-1 for a major decision at 133 lbs.
At 141 lbs., Lief Gilbert jumped out to an 8-0 lead through two periods and added a reversal and 1:12 of riding time to down Joe Perretta (Sr., Havertown, PA/Haverford) 11-2 for a major decision and a 14-0 Army advantage. Pat Simpson added to the lead with an 18-6 major decision at 149 lbs. versus Al Gianforti (Fr., Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy).
Brian Rowan pinned Steve Gregory (Jr., Winchester, MA/Winchester) in 3:34 at 157 lbs., Jon Anderson won by technical fall over Matt Goggin (So., Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) at the 5:05 mark courtesy a 19-3 lead at 165 lbs., Brent Smith picked up a forfeit at 174 lbs. as the Black Knights clinched the victory for a 35-0 lead.
Luke Calvert added to the margin by holding off RP Norley (Sr., Perkasie, PA/Pennridge) 12-7 at 184 lbs., while Todd Wisman built a 4-2 lead through two periods and added 1:47 in riding time for the clinching point as he defeated Nico Somers (Fr., Green Village, NJ/Madison) 5-4 at 197 lbs.
At heavyweight, Army's Mike Sprigg needed a takedown at the horn in the third period to defeat Shawn Coughlin (Sr., Berkley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) 3-1 to finish off the victory.
Franklin & Marshall will continue the season on December 7 at home versus Princeton University. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Mayser Center.
