LANCASTER, PA - Franklin & Marshall College received forfeits at 125, 133 and 141 lbs., but American used a technical fall, pin, decision and forfeits at 184, 197 and heavyweight to overcome Franklin & Marshall College 36-18 in Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association action in the Mayser Center.
American jumped out to a quick 29-0 lead as the Eagles used a pin and technical fall at 165 and 174 lbs., respectively, to build an 11-0 margin before the Diplomats forfeited the 184, 197 and heavyweight matches.
Franklin & Marshall climbed back into the match as Trevor Beard (So., Norristown, PA/Germantown Academy), Rich Gebauer (Sr., South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) and Aviel Ayoung (Jr., Brooklyn, NY/Poly Prep) recorded forfeit victories at 125, 133 and 141 lbs. respectively, to make the score 29-18 with two matches remaining.
However, the Eagles clinched the victory at 149 lbs. as Chris Stout tallied an 18-5 major decision to up the score to 33-18 with the 157 lbs. match left on the slate.
In the most anticipated match of the meet, #4 Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov of American faced #28 Mike Parziale (Jr., Woburn, MA/Woburn) with possible EIWA Tournament seeding ramifications on the line.
Abdurakhmanov jumped out to a 12-5 first period lead as he recorded six takedowns, while Parziale managed five escapes through the first three minutes of the match.
The second period saw Abdurakhmanov build upon his lead as he recorded a pair of takedowns and an escape against an escape by Parziale for a 17-6 score after five minutes of action.
However, the F&M grappler rallied in the third period taking Abdurakhmanov to the mat four times and escaping twice while holding the American star to a takedown and three escapes, as Abdurakhmanov escaped with a 23-16 decision over Parziale.
Parziale, who entered the match with a 30-5 record on the season to rank fourth in single season victories in the College's history, is now 77-24 for his career as he remains fifth in career victories at the College.
Overall, F&M falls to 10-2 all-time against American since the series began in 1978 as the loss snaps a five match winning streak over the Eagles dating back to a 31-22 loss on January 23, 1999 at Duquesne University.
Franklin & Marshall (3-15) will return to the mat on February 25 at Millersville University as the Diplomats will look to record the 600th victory in program history. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
