LANCASTER, PA - Millersville University heavyweight used a two-point takedown with nine seconds remaining in the match to break a 1-1 tie and record a 3-1 win over Shawn Coughlin (Jr., Berkley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) as the Marauders rallied to defeat Franklin & Marshall College 20-15 in wrestling at the Mayser Center.
Trailing 12-7 following a victory by Andrew Smith (So., Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) over Nick Foley by injury default 1:05 into the 157 lbs. match, Millersville (3-8, 0-4 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) began to climb back into the match as Josh Evans used a takedown and four back points to build a 6-0 lead in the second period and held on for an 8-1 win at 165 lbs.
The Marauders took the lead at 174 lbs. as Mark Knock built a 6-2 lead in the first period to hold off Jim Schulz (Fr., Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) 14-8 as Millersville went ahead 13-12 in the team score.
Tim Rice added to the lead at 184 lbs. registering a 14-2 victory over Matt Goggin (So., Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) to put the Marauders ahead 17-12.
Franklin & Marshall cut the margin to two points at 197 lbs. as Nico Somers used a takedown in the third period and 1:24 over injury time to down Steve Funk 7-4 and pull the Diplomats to within 17-15.
However, Davidowich won the match for Millersville as he went ahead 1-0 in the second period with an escape before Coughlin responded with an escape one second into the third period to set up the dramatic finish.
Franklin & Marshall controlled the early going in the match as Doug Ritchey (Fr., Curryville, PA/Central) used a takedown in the third period to down Michael Acedo-Malaney 6-4 at 125 lbs. The Diplomats lead grew to 6-0 at 133 lbs. as Trent Dixon (Sr., Baltimore, MD/Eastern Technical) built a 9-2 lead in the first period and held off a furious comeback to defeat John Andel 11-10.
Millersville won the next two bouts before Smith's victory as Cody Becker stopped Chris Kelly (Fr., Pittstown, NJ/Delaware Valley) 10-1 for a major decision at 141 lbs. and Jarrett Hostetter edged Al Gianforti (Fr., Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) 8-7 at 149 lbs to put the Marauders ahead 7-6.
The loss drops Franklin & Marshall to 3-11 all-time against Millersville in wrestling since the programs first meeting in 1994.
Franklin & Marshall (11-5) will continue the season on March 4-5 at the EIWA Championships hosted by Lehigh University.
