Day One Bracket
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Franklin & Marshall heavyweight, Nico
Somers, is the only Diplomat wrestler still competing after the
first day of the Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC-Greensboro. His
effort helped F&M to 23rd place amongst the 31 competing teams.
Somers knocked off Aaron Brown of the Citadel 5-3 before being
dropped to the consolation bracket in a 5-4 decision to Tyler
Moyer. Somers responded by pinning UNC Greensboro's Joe Sheffield
at 1:32 in the consolation bracket, setting up a Tuesday bout with
Dustin Porter from Gardner-Webb.
Anthony Bongarzone picked up a pair of wins in the championship
bracket, earning a 9-3 decision over Duke's Willy Mello and a 13-1
major decision over Princeton's Aaron Casp. Virginia Tech's Matt
Epperly sent Bongarzone to the consolation bracket where
he was defeated by the Citadel's Dereck Sickel Tuesday
morning.
174-pounder, Justin Herbert, opened his tournament by recording
his third pin of the season at the expense of Gardner Webb's Blake
Slayer. The fall was the 26th of Herbert's career, leaving him four
short of the F&M career mark of 30.
Herbert followed his fall with an **8-4 win over Keith Hynson
(Bloomsburg)**, before dropping a 10-7 decision to North Carolina's
Ben Fiacco. His tournament was ended by Binghamton's Nate Schiedel,
who posted a 3-1 decision.
Al Gianforti went 2-2 at 149 pounds. The Diplomats' senior was
bumped from the championship bracket in his first match by Calvin
Miller of Cal State Bakersfield via 15-3 major decision. He bounced
back with a late second period pin of Binghamton's Thomas Knapp,
followed by a 4-3 decision over Gardner-Webb's Thomas Knapp.
Appalachian State's William Powell ended Gianforti's tournament
with a 7-2 decision.
Matt Fullowan went 1-2 at the Scuffle with his first career pin
coming in the consolation bracket. He decked East Stroudsburg's
Nick Tetro midway through the second period.
Somers returns to action in the consolation bracket tomorrow,
while he and rest of the Diplomats return to action on Saturday at
Penn.
**Editor's Note**: The brackets provided by
UNC-Greensboro indicated an 8-4 decision for Justin Herbert over
Keith Hynson of Bloomsburg. Herbert won the bout by fall. It has
been corrected in the official results at the Southern Scuffle. The
pin is the 27th of Herbert's career, leaving him three shy of the
College's career record.
