NEW YORK - Franklin & Marshall won seven of the nine
contested bouts to take a 31-9 win at Wagner College Sunday
afternoon. Three of the Diplomats (3-9) four upperweights managed
pins over their Seahawk (1-11) opponent to secure the F&M win.
Justin Herbert (17-8), the Diplomats' career pins leader added
another notch in his belt with a first period pin of Laurence
Peotter at 174-pounds. Herbert's 31st career fall came
with three seconds left in the first. Freshman 197-pounder, Colin
Ely (8-12), picked up the third pin of his career, decking Mark
Wagner midway through the first period. Heavyweight, Nico Somers
(11-10) added a third first period pin, needing 1:50 to dispatch
Connor Hart.
184-pounder, Matt Fullowan (8-8) didn't record a pin, but he did
manage an escape point at the start of the second period. That was
enough for the 1-0 win as Fullowan was able to keep Peter Morano on
the mat for the duration of the third period. The win was the fifth
in as many bouts for the frosh.
Anthony Bongarzone (11-13) held a 4-2 lead going into the third
period of the 165-pound bout. Wagner's Sean Quinn chose to work
from the bottom and knotted the match with a reversal. Bongarzone
escaped to take the lead and returned Quinn to the mat to eliminate
any doubt about the outcome.
Al Gianforti (10-15) and Frank Higgins (2-9) won their
respective 141 and 149-pound bouts. Neither team fielded a wrestler
at 125, while Wagner slipped away with a decision at 133 and a pin
at 157. Franklin & Marshall returns to the mat on Friday when
F&M hosts Duquesne. The Diplomats will close out the home slate
next Saturday when F&M hosts American in EIWA action.
