WILKES BARRE, Pa. - Jake Bucha wrestled his way into the
133-pound semifinals of the 78th Wilkes Open, but the
Franklin & Marshall senior saw his run cut short by a first
period knee injury in the bout. His assault on the bracket was the
Diplomats' best effort of the afternoon.
Bucha was in the first minute of his semifinal match with
Drexel's Steve Mytych when his knee betrayed an otherwise
outstanding tournament. The team captain rolled up three decisive
victories on his way to the ill-fated bout, dispatching Luke Todd
(VMI) 10-4, Douglas Maiorano (Pitt-Johnstown) 10-2, and Robert
Slavin (Binghamton) 6-0. The Diplomat improved his record to
14-3.
Matt Fullowan went 2-2 at 174-pounds to move to 10-7 on the
year. He was edged in the main draw by Clarion's Steven Cressley,
4-3. Cressly worked his way to the semifinals, while Fullowan
worked consecutive wins in the consolation bracket. Fullowan took
out the frustration of his first match on UNC-Pembroke's Jake
Ferguson, pasting a 20-2 tech fall on the Brave. He followed that
with a 4-2 win over Maryland's Ty Snook before Pitt-Johnstown's
Steve Makin ended his day with a 7-3 decision.
Anthony Bongarzone picked up a win in the main draw, pinning
Norwich's Connor Keating in the second period. Consecutive losses
ended his day. Matt Latessa (184) and Colin Ely (197) also earned
victories in the main draw before back-to-back losses. Latessa
handed a 6-3 setback to Millersville's Jason Floor, while Ely
handed Maryland's Tom Sitar an 8-1 loss. Eric Norgard picked
up a win in the consolation bracket before bowing out at 149. The
frosh pinned Millersville's Kyle Toth in the first period.
Heavyweight, Dan Canfield, was edged 2-1 in his initial bout by
Brown's Tyler Cowman. A 49-second pin of Newberry's Matt Wade
before Binghamton's Dan Bittner ended his day.
The Diplomats return to action on January 8 for a pair of EIWA
matches against Brown and Harvard at Rutgers.
