NEW YORK - Despite winning four of the seven bouts wrestled, Franklin & Marshall was unable to overcome the holes in its lineup at New York University. Forfeiting three weights, the Diplomats (0-2) fell 30-16 to the Violets (5-3).

Jake Bucha, Anthony Bongarzone, Matt Fullowan and Dan Canfield all picked up wins for F&M. That group was unblemished on the weekend. With the exception of Bongarzone, who did not wrestle on Friday at Princeton, the group went 2-0 on the weekend.

Bucha (11-3) pinned Steve Contino late in the 133-pound bout to negate the F&M forfeit at 125. The match had been close through the first two periods, but Bucha wore down Contino in the final period, turning back points into a pin. The Diplomats gave six right back with an empty slot at 141. F&M was also without a wrestler at 197.

Bongarzone's return to the lineup gave the Diplomats a boost in the form of a 4-0 win over Sean Connors. Bongarzone used an escape, a two-point turn and the riding point to take the decision. Fullowan (8-5) piled up nine takedowns en route to a 19-7 major over Steve Massey at 174.

The bumped-up heavyweight Dan Canfield continued his hot streak at 285 with a 7-4 decision over Jamie Myers to get back to .500 on the year at 5-5. The grapplers traded takedowns with Canfield scoring the third and final of the night for the edge in the bout.

"There is not a lot we can do about the skeleton of a lineup," said Diplomats' mentor, Pete Schuyler. "We wrestled with great intensity and our conditioning pulled us through a few tight matches. I feel very good about the way the guys who are wrestling are wrestling."

The depleted Diplomats will get an extended opportunity to get bodies healthy. F&M is idle until after the Keystone Classic after the holidays.
